Title: Knocking Noise Possibly Charger - Video
Post by: Matty! on September 23, 2013, 11:38:36 AM
Hi Guys

So took the Polo out for a lovley drive across the North yorkshire moors on Saturday morning, and When I got home on tickover the car now sounds like zis!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2jVGmg38_0E&feature=share&list=UU3zfjzVRGiG4IfsEp5_oNiw

This noise is only on tickover, once revved and under load as you can here it disappears, is this the common trait of the charger going?

I have checked the oil feed line and thats flowing fine, next maybe to remove the belts but I thought I would check here first.

Its an R1 Charger and was rebuilt 6000miles ago albeit back in 2007 mind!

I Dont know which category this should have been in probably charger.

Hope someone can help me diagnose the problem or is it rebuild time?

Thanks
Matty

Sounds like the charger belt is delaminating

Are the belts tubbin on anything? Ie the timing belt cover or the pointer near the crank pulley? Are the pulleys for the belts tight aswell? Sounds like something is slack or rubbing on something! I. Had mine rub againtbthe timing belt cover before

Gaz, Mark, cheers for your help :)

The car runs absolutely spot on, literally just makes a rattle on idle... So this is why Im slightly baffled, Im swaying towards the inner belt maybe the issue as that wont have been changed for however many years.

I think im going to buy a rebuild kit anyways and do it for peace of mind, just a shame as the car was coming off the road at the end of next month I just wanted to squeeze the last of the nice weather out in it!

But any other suggestions or if its happened before to someone please do entail!

Thanks guys

If it was the belt that like a timing belt i sure if its out the charger can explode so i doubt its that mate

the charger timing belt isnt rubbing on the inside of the bracket is it? I had to grind some away after getting the bigger belt.

I got recommended to replace that belt every 3 years regardless of mileage. Mine has only ever made a weird noise like that due to missing teeth on the belt. Mine are toothed but when i gave it a rev it went just like your video.

Have you checked the belts all the way for loss of teeth?

I had same problem but it was the bracket from charger to engine check there is no crack on the pulley side cover bracket just above the pulley
