Title: G40 air filters
Post by: Lionheart on September 22, 2013, 01:49:28 PM
Hi All

I have just acquired a 'G40' (going but running project) and giving it a good look over, any recommended checks would be hugely appreciated.

It seems to lowered about 30-40mm, and feels like a stage 1 to 2 level of engine mods.

The air filter set up is a Jetex JR blue 76mm inlet 140mm base 120mm top 162mm long in a heat shield enclosure, looks ok but a bit dirty - recommendations for a clean? Not sure how appropriate it is, when held up to the sky you can see a fair bit of light coming through - any thoughts? Keep, clean, oil? Or Bin and if so any recommendations for replacements?

Also interested in thoughts on wheel/tyre sizes, can it go to 14" with lower profile and work ok etc?

Thanks
James

Looking for:
Centre dash clocks
Wheel arch plastics, all 4 (like the idea of mk1s if poss)

Probably a jabba induction kit and heatshield.

Give it a good clean and re oil. I use k&n stuff but anything along that will be fine. If you dont want to have the cone filter than you Can always go back to standard air box.

14's a lot of people run. I run 195/45 easily and mines lowered 60/40. Dont know if you can go lower profile as there isn't a great deal of sizes in 14.

Thanks Jezza, have obtained a K&N cleaning kit, washed down the filter and now drying it out prior to a re-oil.
Also found a tyre calculator and see the original of 175/60-13  is the same as 185/50-14 (a common size and only slightly bigger than 195/45-14 also fairly common size.

How does a 195 fit and drive like? It's current quite a 'sweet' thing on the originals just wondering if it becomes too heavy and maybe harsh?

IMO, 185/50's are the best fit.
However, the choice of tyres in that size is very limited.

Thanks for replies,
Hi Jezza, looks like you are an Aircraft Engineer, I am currently halfway through my Aircraft Engineering Apprenticeship.
Hi Breadman, big admirer here of sleeper Breadvans. Aiming for a sleeper with mine,

Looks like some Golf driver steelies or Passat steelies in 14" with 185/60s on is the way i am thinking of going. Perhaps with less plastics (no side / arch) and 'genesis' painted bumpers.

185/60's will be pretty tall and look a bit "balloony". You may have issues with arch clearance too with such a large tyre if the car is lowered.
There is a lot to be said for a good quality 175/60/13 tyre and wheel combination. Again tyre choice is fairly limited and you can't increase the size of the brake setup, some may say that outright grip is compromised too especially if your gonna do trackdays with it. However a set of Yokohama or Toyo's in this size with a decent suspension setup and a PPP stage 2 subframe will make for a great little chassis with good grip and fairly decent ride quality - for a Polo anyway!
Good luck.

Meant to say 185/50-14s ! Need to be no bigger than before to fit in... I agree with you on the original size tyres, other than track days it would make for a good compromise, as probably intended!

Its possible to run 256mm brakes under 13's you just need the right wheels.

I run 185/50 R14 on most of my polo's and clearance on a 60/60 drop is fine.

Currently running 175/50 R14 on my Derby and thats fine, suits the narrower wheels a little more too.

Also when you say centre dash clocks, do you mean speedo cluster?

195 is fine mate, the cup kit i got is harsh as well so dont help.

Yeah im an aircraft engineer is the Royal Navy.

I got a little arch gap still so i reckon a slightly bigger tyre would be ok.

I used to get the wheels rubbing on the ppp subframe on the struts but now i got the adjustable tca's they dont rub.
