Selling already mate? thats a shame.

Was a cracking little car when I owned her for almost 3 years before Mario, and as he said I spent a fair about of money and time on her.

I've just registered with this Forum so that I can tell you guys an interesting story about H838AVV.

Well I've had the most bizarre afternoon I can tell you.

I very occasionally browse through Piston Heads Classifieds in the remote offchance of seeing if there are any decent G40 Polos on the road as they becoming any increasingly rare site these days.

Whilst posted in Germany in the early 90's my wife and I were the proud owners of a brand spanking new G40 in Tornado Red in the July of 1991 and we promply named it "Red Snaper".

There was much hype in the motoring press about this new little pocket rocket and I was very keen to be one of the first to own one.

All my mates were into the hothatch scene so you can imagine the car parks were full of Astra and Nova GTE's , Escort RS Turbos and Golf GTI's. As you could take advantage of the Tax Free incentives of being in the HM Forces most of us younger guys could afford to buy decent performance cars.

One of my mates was so taken with the performance and sound of that little G40 supercharger that he sold his MK2 Golf GTI and bought one too ! Next thing the Tax Free car sales guy starts offering me a bonus of a £100 for each G40 that he sells on my recommendation ! Well I didn't have to try too hard that's for sure.

The G40 was lavished to excess. Polished with Autoglym Super Resin and finished off with Extra Gloss Protection. BBS Alloys were a pain to clean but looked good in the end. Oil changed every 3000mls.

The bonus scheme was working fine. It enabled me to get the VW local dealer to fit the fog lights in the front bumpers , a colour keyed Kamei grill spoiler , and a top end sound system without me spending a penny !

Sadly after the demise of the Berlin Wall and the end of the Cold War it was time to get posted back to the UK......the honeymoon period was over. It was back to 15% mortgage interest rates and sky high car insurance premiums.

There was a lot of scare mongering about car crime back in the UK especially with "hot hatches" so we ditched the idea of trading up to a G60 Corrado and brought our little "Red Snapper" home with us.

On a cold dark and wet depressing night in November '93 we did the unforgivable thing of cheering ourselves up and made an impulsive decision to trade Red Snapper in for a new Golf at our local VW dealer.

I never thought that I would be so sentimentally attached to a car as much as this one. It gave us so much fun and happy memories and it was really gut wrenching to eventually see it go.

To this day whenever I see a Red Polo Coupe the first thing I listen for is the drone of that little supercharger and if the plates read H838AVV...........so imagine my surprise when there she was for sale in the Classifieds !!

I almost fell off my chair....I picked the phone up straightaway without a blink and contacted Mario. I'm sure he thought that intially I was some timewasting nutter but this was soon dispelled. There are so many more stories I can tell about "our" beloved G40 (She will always be ours ....you have to understand that don't you ?) but I'll leave that to the new owner to contact me if he wishes.

All I can say is that she looks a little tired from when I last saw her 17 yrs ago but be good to her and I hope she brings you the same joy that she gave us all those years ago.

Best Wishes

Serge and Rachel

twas me that bought it   :)

so your'e the 1st owner? did you buy it from a uk dealer or in germany while you were there? always nice to hear the history of a car, it'll be well looked after and has been by the previous 2 owners, my mate warrren who's posted above owned it before mario.
i've had one before but unfortunately it got crashed into by a pug and written off :(
its had a partial respray at some point and possibly a n/s/r 1/4 panel, there is some rust appearing here and there but its pretty good for near 20 years old
so its come back to Northampton, your welcome to come see it if your ever near by  ;)

Hi Ade,

Nice to hear from you.

Bought it in Germany but not from a local VW dealer. As the G40 was in RHD it was shipped over from a Tax Free dealership in the UK. Can't recall if it was Milton Keynes or not. There was a VW Tax Free sales office based at RAF Gutersloh were I bought it from and I think it was the first RHD G40 that was sold over there.

If I knew what I know now (hindsight what a great thing that is) I wouldn't have had the roof cut for the glass sunroof. My mate had a J plate G40 in Gunmetal Grey but had a factory fitted sunroof but he waited for the special order .....I couldn't wait as I wanted the car there and then !!!

The work was done by VW-Audi Autohaus Auto Schäfer GmbH in Harswinkle but the buggers made a slight crease in the roof when installing it , I was livid at the time. I also fitted the armoured door plates when over there too.

I also had to have a supermarket trolley dent removed from the nearside rear 1/4 panel so the partial respray mystery may be solved. I always remember parking at the other far end of supermarket car parks to avoid the car getting ding'd. On this occasion I came back to the car to find some b****d had rammed my car with a trolley. I went absolutely ape and started ranting at anyone who was looking at me going ape ! Dings and Dents if they existed back then would probably have removed the dent in 15 mins but back then it had to be filled and resprayed. This was also done at VW-Audi Autohaus in Harswinkle.

I was looking at all the old pictures of her last night just after we picked her up from the showroom so can scan them and post them on to the Forum if your interested. When we came back to the UK I fitted Polo GT badges so as not draw any attention.

I must admit it would be great to see the car again if I was ever in the area. I'm really tempted to get another one for sure....there's a mint one for sale on Piston Heads for £4K at the moment. In fact I dropped the seller a line to tell him that I used to own one just like his and that led me to H838AVV. Who knows it might be fate !  ;D
