Title: Rear strut options
Post by: dub-disaster on May 12, 2011, 10:44:36 am
One of my h&r rear shocks are busted so I need a new pair of rear struts can't get them from h&r as they won't sell to me directly eurocarparts are their uk distributor and are useless  and after tax and shipping costs there going to be in the region of £450-500 for two bare rear shocks !!
Just wondered if I could say mix and match and stick some gaz on the back can get a rear set with shocks for £350 or would it be advisable to pay the extra £210 on top of that and get the full kit so the front and back match ?
Or if any one has got any ideas where to get decent quality rear shocks and springs adjustable would be good from that would be cool    Thanks

I wouldn't worry about fronts to rears not matching.  I've been running Konis on the front and Spax coilovers on the back of mine for ages.  £350 still sounds a pretty insane price for just a pair of rear shocks though!  Koni yellows are normally about £100 each.

konis are about £70 eacha and are hardness adjustable and come in different lengths for diff heights

even less then!  yeah they have short & extra-short ones (extra short being designed for 60mm+ lowering).  and the yellows are off-car damping adjustable yes.

Ok I'll have a look for some konis then, if I was to get just a single h&r shock for £166 would I have to replace the other original h&r shock that is about 5 years old to match it or could I just replace one ???

you can just replace one although the other side might not be far off if they are just failing through age & use

Bilstein sprint cost 110 per corner (rear ones)

PS. I phoned Koni official dealer a year ago and told me that these are discontinued...  ???
Can you find these shocks in the UK?

Direct from gaz got to wait 4 weeks for them but the bloke said as there special order I could get them at trade price or somthing. He also said he'd do the fronts for 140 each including a spring plus vat which is pretty cheap but I don't need new fronts at the moment although the Allen but is fucked in the top of my current ones so nice to know when I need them I can get them for a reasonable price

I want a pair of front gaz coilover inserts, did you just email them?

I emailed them and they quoted me £600 plus vat for all four. So I phoned them up later on and the bloke gave me trade discount and a realy good price so I'd probably go for just giving them a ring. I'm half tempted to get the fronts aswell because they are rebound/bump adjustable but a thread on here put me of that they had to have 270lb springs on the front to make up for short travle on them or something along those lines

Have you tried contacting them about servicing the originals? No idea what the cost would be for them, can't see it being more than £100 for all 4 though? It's only a few seals and a bit of oil/ air! (Assuming it's leaking and not literally snapped a strut or something).

The bottom limit had come free and only left me with a about a quaternary inch of travle they said I'd would be between 60€ and 180€ for the shocks to be fixed considering when the price new was £166 needing to add vat and delivery and any german taxes it all worked out a damn sight more expensive than the gaz option I went with in the end !!
