Title: whats needed for an eaton conversion
Post by: DannyEss on July 11, 2010, 12:22:12 pm
Hi. i tried a search but most of it was just people mentioning eatons and it didnt really help.

Anyway, If i bought a g40 engine without a charger i was just wondering how much it would cost to do an eaton conversion. I know i had the thread in the other section and a few of you said it would cost more but i just want to see whats needed and how much it would be.

I read that the eaton is abit more friendly (there is another word im looking for there but my mind has gone blank :D) than the g-lader in terms of servicing etc arent they? Obvioulsy this may cost more, in terms of other items i need to buy to get one fitted than just buying a g-lader.

So what is needed other than the m45 eaton.

any info would be gratefully appreciated

quite abit! I'd say the hardest part is getting a map to run it right.

Take a look on my build thread. Should give you some idea.

It is better and easier to fit a K03

i'd budget for about £1000 for either a turbo or eaton conversion to a g40.

eaton
mounting bracket (custom)
custom belt kits
injectors
cam
air filter
mapping
big intercooler

eatons should be sealed for life - so if one goes you just buy another.  However they were once about £100- but are considerably more now!

All I'd add is that all you ever hear about from people with Eatons is that they have shredded belts, its not running right etc. All the people with turbo conversion's I know of seem to have very few problems with them. And they dont have that hideous noise to contend with.

yeah, does anyone actually have a properly working eaton conversion on here at the moment?  Seem to be a lot of problems.

I'd expect a k03 conversion to cost less than an eaton, I thihk pete's estimate of £1000 for an eaton conversion is a bit too low.  Considering that the custom map you'll more than likely need will cost a fair few hundred.

i'd say that you could get a decent serviced charger for £500, which should last at least 15,000 miles even if driven very hard!

Well whats that about AW tracksport (i think thats their name) who quote £700 to do the full conversion?

the aw tracksport conversion does not have a good reputation!

what comes in the conversion?  eaton+brackets? - you might need more £ for a cam, map, intercooler, injectors etc.

the AW kits are known for not fitting snuggly or having enough tensioners for the belt.

Mines not eating belts now :) Just needs remapping!

It probably will be eating belts once it's been mapped!

Well I have an eaton conversion, that works! It never shredded any belt in the 4 years that's on the car, and I had no problem working the eaton with nothing more than fitting it to the car! My g40 produces 143hp at the crankshaft with the standard injectors and never got me no problem! I know I can get it to work better with stuff like a proper camshaft, but it does work even with the standard intercooler and the standard ecu!
