vw fitted the wrong engine?
« on: April 29, 2009, 08:56:00 pm »
i am currently converting a 1.3 cl to a g40,
am i right in thinking that the cl should come with a carbed 1.3?
it has a gt engine in at the moment which i am removing,
but i have to say that it looks the engine has been there from new!
i bought the car off an old lady, who has owned it since new and i
have a folder full of all the service history from new - there is no mention
of an engine change!

and i cant imagine an old dear having a gt lump put in!

any thoughts on this?

sounds like an nz..common mistake..nz is a 1.3 multipoint injection which to the untrained eye looks likea gt engine..it is however just 55bhp? 60?  cant remember but it definetly sounds like youve got one of those!

no mk3 polo came with a carb.  Most 1.3CLs were single point injection.  Some had multipoint NZ engine randomly fitted.  It is multipoint so looks a bit like a GT engine but it still has 55bhp like any other CL (it's more tunable than the single point engines though).  It's identifyable by the vacuum advance unit on the dizzy (flying saucer thing) whereas an actual GT has electronic advance control.  The ECU will also say Digijet on it rather than Digifant for a proper GT.

If selling the engine it should be worth a touch more than a single point CL engine.

just had a look at the engine again,
the ecu is a digifant one and it has a pipercross bolt on cone filter
made for a gt engine, also when the car was running (headgasket now shot)
it was pretty rapid for a standard 1.3!

maybe im wrong but i think it probably is a gt lump?

The NZ engine can be distinguished by the Digijet ECU and vacuum advance dizzy. The 3F motor has digifant management so you probably had a GT engine there !
