Title: what size tyres for my new wheels
Post by: g40chris on March 11, 2009, 03:24:02 pm
i got a set of schimiter gte wheels which i have been refurbing for the G40, i have also had them redrilled for vw fitment, need to get spigot rings made by mate next.

they are 14" in diameter but im not sure how to work out the offset or width, where to measure from and to...?

im wondering what size tyres i need to order so they dont foul the arches. the car is quite low on the front but rear end sticks up a bit. either 40mm or 60mm drop iirc on koni dampening adjustable suspension

offset is usually stamped on the wheels somewhere, "ET" followed by some numbers.  It's not easily measurable.

This about somes it up,

the distance from the inner edge of the rim to the mounting face of wheel, minus the half the rim width(distance between bead seating area), if its negative then your already up against it with clearance.

If your on 14"s then I'd recommened 195/45 or 185/50(expensive if you can find some) though I'm sure 175/60 would be alright, but think the rolling diameter gets a bit large on that profile.

are they the slot mag style one's??

it says 6x5.5

cant find et anywhere on them

the wheels are made in uk by dunlop

the outside edge is chrome and the inside is a softer metal, like aluminium

if these are 5.5 inch wide then will the 195/45/14 fit them ok and where is best place for me to get them at a tidy price

try AutoStop on Brackla industrial estate(Bridgend-not to far from you) the do Falken's ZE's in that size which is a good around tyre in my opinion, there not super soft so if your looking for bags of grip then there are better tyres out there.

If they're only 5 1/2" wide I wouldn't fit a 195 tyre. Even with a 45 aspect ratio they'd be a bit "loose" in terms of sidewall control.
5 1/2" x 14" isn't a good size wheel when it comes to tyre choice. 175/55 would be about the best fit I reckon.

In all my days of polo's I never thought I would see someone put Reliant scimitar wheels on a G40

fair play, might as well try them as you have got them to the right PCD. See what they look like....

You can always change them  :P
