Weren't the original proper Rally Rallyes 16v G60? 320ish BHP springs to mind?
-
Proper Rallyes were 1.8 8v with a slightly lower capacity than a normal G60 engine in order to classify in a certain class of the motorsport they were built for.
I believe VW Motorsport did build some 16v ones but they're not what you'd call "proper" ones, more like one or two off specials.

They did indeed. The 16V G60 Syncro. IMHO the best Golf ever made.

That engine has no pistons or valves in !
-
That's a G60 Limited though, not technically a Rallye ;)

I used to wonder what a G60'd Golf country would be like. Quite funny I'd have thought, Like an economy Range Rover Vogue, lol
