Hello, I am the happy new owner of Steve Morris' genesis conversion :)
The clutch slips when the charger kicks in, its still very much drivable in normal situations I just want to get it sorted sooner rather than later
Im just wondering because im a tad lost, what clutch would you guys recommend? ive looked through the forum and all that keeps popping out to me are helix clutches and big price tags, i dont really want to spend a ridiculous amount of money i just want something usable as its a daily but something that can still take some abuse from time to time
Im not too sure on bhp or torque figures i presume its pretty standard
Are the standard G40 clutches from the likes of gsf up to this or shall I look elsewhere?
Also,
How big of a job is it to replace a clutch and are there any special tools needed? im fairly confident that i can do it myself (touch wood) and i do have a haynes manual im just wondering if anyones got any experience with it?
Cheers :D

its doable in an afternoon with a basic kit tbh (as long as you have driveshaft spline tools) just lots easier with a friend and a haynes manual!!
i'd recommend a decent make (LUK etc) mk4 polo 16v clutch kit- early one with AFH engine code. Decent price, bolt on to a g40 and i know a few people, including myself have used them on g40s with up to about 150bhp.
Should be under a ton.

Cheers mate ill have a look 8)
When you say driveshaft spline tools what do you mean, are they the same sort of bit as whats needed for head bolts?
My minds gone blank
-
Yes. Smaller version of the bits for headbolts.
-
Nice one,
Does anyone have any thoughts on clutches from cg Motorsport? They seem quite reasonable
-
I'd just get a standard LUK clutch from GSF or similar. Unless you're planning on big power I don't see any point in spending more money. As Pete said, they list the same part for an early 6n polo AFH engine (1.4 16v) too.

For the driveshafts you want this, (cant remember what size think its M8)

drivesshaft spline is M8, jez is correct
a 200mm 16v clutch and pressure plate will be fine for your power output
-
Ahh that's good I have a set of those :)
Before I press the buy button is this what I need?
http://www.gsfcarparts.com/189vg1760
I've looked on eurocarparts and they are cheaper and have a selection but they don't specify if its for a 16v or not :-\
-
Whilst im still online ......
I've just had a look at someone's reg plate from auto trader to get the right car, and it's come up with a selection on 3 on eurocarparts, the first LUK one is this,
http://www.eurocarparts.com/ecp/c/Volkswagen_Polo+Hatch_1.4_1998/p/car-parts/car-transmission/clutch-and-associated-parts/clutch-kit/?641440620&1&3e8ded596b830d76e7475e071dfb0f2664a82ee2&000069
(If the link works)
it still doesn't specify 16v or not
The other LUK one out of the 3 has a £50+ price and still doesn't give me any detail on it, surely there both for 16v because I used a reg but why such a difference in price?
-
that looks right.
is the other 200mm (200mmm is size you want)
also if you use clutch25 get a discount.
Alternatively use the euro part number on carparts4less to check price - as these are just euro without the counter, just online!
-
If anything the more expensive LUK clutch kit gives me less information :/ lol, there both 200mm it's just that ones £93 an the others £142
-
I've brought a standard LUK one for a 16v came to £102, turns out the more expensive one is for a gti
Now to find the time
