Title: Clutch cable snapped!!
Post by: Jake G 4 0 on December 12, 2011, 04:25:15 pm
Right lads and ladies, as title states my clutch cable snapped yesterday luckily I was close to home and made it back without the clutch.  When phoneing my local Vw they gave me great news that it's an obsolete part now!! So does anyone know where I could aquire one??

Thanks.

GSF, get a manually adjusting one though as they are far better, you'll need the spring on the release arm if you dont already (couple of quid from VW) make sure you grease up the cable to stop it snapping quickly in the future

I got one from Linco (actually I have had about three so far) they are quite a common part.
Anyone know how to stop these snapping? I've been thinking of making up a metal end and adding a grease nipple to the cable.

GSF will only supply you an adjustable one now. Ordered one 3 weeks ago. They said something about the spring, they might possibly have them. Weren't really listening as i got a spring already.

I thought about something like that as they are really bad cables. My mate always carries a spare in the boot incase his snaps.

Cheers lads it wasn't actually the cable that snapped it was the plastic piece that connects to the clutch in the pedal box.

I'll get on to GSF ASAP surely they will have the arm spring as well??

yeah they should do if they sell that style of clutch cable. The little white clip is usually the problem i have. 1st one snapped and the 2nd one just lost grip of the cable.

Pour some engine oil down the cable to keep it lubricated. It also feels smoother with the oil.

I'm of the opinion that the spring keeps the arm at a sensible angle to the bushes, giving the arm a little opposite force to the clutch cable which pulls it down - thus reducing friction and wear. How true this is I don't know.

I think it just makes sure that the bearing sits properly and takes the slack out of the clutch arm.

My 1st one did that too. I just put a few big washers on to stop it coming off.

The recent one i got is a different make, last was italian, but this is looking better with no rubber splitting.

Mine's only ever had manuals - not that this means anything, as it could've been changed to a manual cable at any point during its life. But my last manual cable snapped after the Polo Show last year if you remember - I've had an auto cable on it since. Will look into getting a manual one. :)

guys - these cables snap because of the crappy angle that the cable sits at where it goes into the steering rack. to help the problem use a jubilee clip on the cable before the clutch cable holder (on exhaust hanger) to pull the cable closer to the pedalbox. it will make more of a loop and be less tight on the angle

I used to go through these on my g40.  I found that the genuine cables were thicker side by side with a gsf one (the inner cable).  This meant that the feel of the pedal was heavier with the vw one.  I found that the rubber of the gsf one where it secured onto the box was crap and always spilt and pushed through. In the end I made a hybrid of the two.  I used the lighter gsf cable, genuine vw zinc coated nuts, washers etc and on the cnc machine at work I made nylon bushes to replace the rubber ones.  This made the pedal feel much better and it never ever split.  A good soaking in oil in a bucket for a few days is a good call too for a nice light clutch.

The GSF ones are definitley lighter than the Vw ones although I did prefer my Vw one. Not a big fan of having a light clutch because you can feel the strength of  the Vw one. As for the rubber on the end we shall see how long it lasts hopefully it won't go when I'm miles from home...
