Title: Quarterlight glass..
Post by: rml2711 on June 02, 2010, 08:02:19 pm
I'm looking to replace my clear glass windows with factory tinted ones..I have already installed both rear windows and have the door wind-up ones ready to go in.The question concerns the 1/4 lights .The G40 has windows with a flush fitting 1/4 light,is it possible to remove the glass from the rubber and insert tinted glass from an 'ordinary' polo into the G40 rubber,or are the glasses bonded into the rubber seal on the G40?

Any details/advice would be most helpful please...

Peter. :)

they are bonded.

you can still get the g40/gt tinted and bonded 1/4s at the main dealer

Just an update...Dealers quoted,£88. plus VAT each!,Got to be joking who really will pay that for parts for a 1992 car?...It's not as though it's a critical mechanical item.

Guess I'll live with plain glass for now or go back to my idea of using non-G40 tinted glass with a seperate rubber.

i got some when my ex worked at vauxhall - so she got them trade+10% which was £45-48 each.

the non bonded quarters wil need different mirror gaskets, and they are noisier

They are much noisier. Couldnt believe the difference when Pete got hold of the bonded tinted quarters for me.

When going unbounded to bonded do you need a different (sorry, don't know the term) 'upright separator' between to quarter light and main part of the window?

no they are the same - but you do need a different washer/flange round the mirror base plate
