suspension/rear axle???
« on: September 28, 2010, 09:37:49 pm »
I recently bought some koni dampers and springs. I have fitted the rear drivers side with ease but the rear passenger side the bolt holding the old damper in place that goes through the axle has rusted inside the sleeve of the damper and impossible to get out. I have tried everything i cut the head off and tried hammering it, heated it up and i drilled it today which didnt go to well :( i drilled through a tiny bit off line and missed the other end by 1-2mm.

I was just wondering if anyone else had trouble like this and any solutions to my problem.

Thanks in advanance for any input or solutions.

Jake

Not got round to that area yet, thats on the to do list.

But here are the part no.s for the bolts and nuts if needed?

bolt 861513471
Nut (self locking) N 0221671

The bolt comes up as "screw" at vw as i found out earlier today.

get a hack saw and cut the bolt either side of the shock, but within the square hole of the axle if you get my drift.

Nasty job but only way to get it out really

quite a common thing, happened to me a few years ago.  Like Pete said, pretty much the only way I could see is to use a small hack saw blade and cut through the bolt either side of the shock (well, you can just grind the head off it on one side).  It's not a nice job and your arm will ache like mad by the end of it :)

I had a similar problem when my bolt got stuck in the axle.

i got mine off with an irwin stud remover, soon got the nut on the inside of the axle locked up and i simply used a socket then, however it did cost me £21 for the set of irwin sockets, but a great tool to have in the tool box as they get any rusted/fubar bolts undone

did it not turn then fella? to loosen it up a bit?

they normally turn fine.  But turn the whole of the suspension leg bush as well!!! its the bolt that rusts to the bush.

Copper ease the whole bolt when reassembling!!!
