Clutch replacement
« on: October 24, 2010, 08:04:30 pm »
Evening folks, before I bolt my gearbox back up, I intend to drop a new clutch in. So i'm just after a few peoples opinions, i've done a few searches, but only seem to come up with threads on paddle clutches etc. In one thread I heard that a G40 ran 170bhp on a standard clutch, so with only 150, I plan to run an o.e spec clutch to keep driveabilty from day to day, as I don't intend to up its power much anytime soon.
The question I wanted to post, was, what are peoples opinions on clutches from the likes of GSF and Euro, has anybody used these? And were they any good? Or similarly, where have people had clutches from, at sensible money for decent kit?
Also is a MK4 polo 16v clutch the same? I vaguely remember reading that some time ago, but can't seem to find that again!

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks very much Rich  ;D

depends on what power you'll be running.

I ran a LUK 16v clutch for a fair few miles (40k ish) with toothies, flowed charger gt inlet etc thats 150bhp ish. as did Samg40 - from GSF.  I tried a Sachs one from them but the middle came out as I was fitting it!!!! so they exchanged. .  Not sure what the difference is from a stock g40 clutch, I think its a slightly different friction plate, not sure, the valver one works fine though!

yeah Paul Borthwick managed with a standard clutch with approx 170bhp, works but wont last as long as it would on a standard car mind!

The cheapest decent brand I found was an LUK one meant for a 16v for £82 from buypartsby a couple of weeks ago. Full kit. Yet to fit though it looks well made. Release bearing is a bit different to what I was expecting though. Will find out when fitting I guess.

Cheers very much folks. I'm hopefully running 150bhp, so think I will plump for a 16v clutch. Did you use the 16v release bearing too Pete/Etches???

I think I use a 9n 16v clutch on my G! If I remember correctly its slightly bigger in diameter but will still fit! Can't be 100% sure cause I wasn't there when it was fitted but the mechanic said he used the same clutch as my other polo uses and my other polo is a 9n!  ;D I have it for about 60.000 klm now and it works fine! My g is 143Ps!
