Right - lets have a look what we bought! It appears to have been built in 1992 - chassis prefix N, dates on plastic parts from 1991-early 1992. It has 2 oil pressure switches, clocks with temp light, no belt guides on rear quarter trim panels and early spare wheel/towing eye/wheelbrace stowage. It also has no cig lighter or grab handles above the doors!

Bodywork wise its a twenty year old car. Its had a poor respray at some point and had windows + trim etc. masked up. Dents, scratches and chips painted over. Some would say its not too bad for its age and I am a picky bastard but the description of "almost immaculate" is not how I'd describe it. I see my grey car as almost immaculate. Anyways it will be getting a full strip and respray at some point. The passenger door is the least straight panel but should be able to make a good 'un out of it. The paint is flaking at various points where it was masked up to windows/trim so further need for a proper job. Its really hard to photograph but there seems to be white flecks under the laquer over most of the car
Generally though the dents are pretty minor and the sills and arches seem to be tip top and it has the potential to be a truly beautiful example.
I have always been fussy about paint!

The not so good bits - all four tyres well perished - not really a problem. The broken front badge was held on with a lump of silicone sealer and the rear badge is broken in two - hey ho. The front bumper and a couple of trim pieces are scuffed up - I have some spares but will be on the lookout for a new/better bumper. The screen seal is full of rusty water - hopefully I can sort this before the screen frame rots. By far the worst part of the car is the bit I looked at first, the battery tray. Its totally rotted out and been "repaired" with fibreglass leaving no way for any water to run off. Quality. Had to knock some coin off for this - its gonna be a ballache to do a proper job of this!

I'm gonna replace the master cylinder and possibly put a spare servo on to get the brakes up to par. Then replace the tyres and fit a new battery before getting it MOT'd. I'll do some miles in it to ensure its all in order before it gets stripped for some paint. Seems to drive fine other than the weak brakes so hopefully wont need much mechanical work. Probably strip it in the spring so I can do the restoration work without freezing my cock off!

Threw the crappy aftermarket stereo away and reinstated the super poverty spec blanking plate that was in the boot. Think this is how it came when new. Just noticed that it has side impact door bars - don't know what date these were used from - perhaps someone knows this?

Fair doos. I'd like to find out which lights it came with originally. The orange side repeaters suggest it should have orange indicator lenses and early tail lights. I have vague memories of seeing the green T reg at E38 years ago sporting orange indicators but time may have damaged the brain cells involved!

Mine's an August '92 K-plate and has them, but it's a breadvan - so possibly Coupes might be different?

it'll be a mismatch of build date to registration date.... only looked at g40s tbh and they probably stood around longer than lower specced cars.

The other one T reg I've seen had clear front indicators and later smoked rears, but I'm guessing the guy changed them.
cool that it has no sunroof.

It would appear that the only optional extras it has are tinted glass and a faintly musty odour to the upholstery.

Got the log book back this week so I've started to prepare for the MOT. Wheels are off for powder coating and new tyres, new battery installed and new master cylinder fitted. Also got the screen washers working and fitted new wiper blades. Should hopefully have it taxed and MOT'd in time for GTI Festival at Santa Pod on October 13th

MOT and tax sorted. Just needed to change the front flexy hoses as they were well tired. Fortunately I had a pair of Goodridge ones lying around from my broken black car so it was a cheap fix! It was my first proper look underneath today and it all seems pretty good under there apart from the selector shaft seal leaking. Brake lines + compensator not corroded and sills spot on. Fuel pump whines quite loudly so I've ordered one in. Finally added to the mileage too!

Changed the oil and filter this afternoon - I reckon its been almost 3 years since it was last done. Not driven a standard G40 since 2006 - I'd forgotten how shit standard brakes were! It took a bit of getting used to. Done more miles in it today than its done in the last 7 years! So far the only things I've found that need attention straight away are the fuel pump and the selector shaft seal - should have these done by weekend.

Made it! Performed faultlessly - I don't know if I should be surprised or not.

A trip to the VW dealers saw me leave with only one of the many parts I requested but I now have a date of manufacture - 17.06.92. Looks even more like the early style lights will be going back on.

Done 500 miles in it now - seems that all is in order. I'll hopefully start tearing it down for a respray in the Spring but for now I've put it to bed for the winter.

Small update - scored a NOS genuine front bumper off ebay, some new badges and a set of injector jackets. Christmas came early this year!

Not much progress with this yet - too cold to work on it for long. The next few weeks should see the dash and carpets out to make a start on that poxy battery tray. In the mean time I've been collecting stuff for the restoration and doing odd jobs that can be done indoors!

Dug it out the other day when it was dry and did another couple of hundred miles. I really enjoy driving it - nice and quiet but still reasonably quick. A lot less frantic than the grey one! Gonna put off making a start on it for a short while to get a bit more use out of it before it comes to bits. Spot the piece of wood holding the battery down due to the bodged clamp in the bodged battery tray breaking!

The plan for Sunday was to get the interior stripped out but due to the fine dry weather it would have been a waste. Spent all day driving polos instead!

Done a thousand miles since purchased - piss poor effort on my part for not getting stuck into it yet! Should be massively easier to do than the grey one was as the only welding job required is that battery tray. Hopefully the original backbox splitting this week will help me towards getting my act together!

This is how not to do it - a piece of steel sheet had been shaped and tacked into position. It was then fibreglassed over and seam sealed leaving the rusty remains below to carry on rusting. Shite. Anyway its gone now - proper job to follow!

My guess is that it was sat out in the weather in Malaysia for years. Must have been sat with the passenger side lower down than the drivers so that the water couldn't get out of the drain hole. It was laid up in 2006 because of this so it only lasted for 7 years use before the battery went South!

Started moving all my polo crap into the unit today. Just got to shift a load of skyline crap out and the job can properly commence.

Bought a 1litre cheaply to break for parts. The battery tray is 100% sound so will be removed and grafted into T323 JHB.
Stripped a fair bit today - should be able to start cutting this week.

Some serious cutting and grinding and its free. Gonna unpick the spot welds now its out as access is much better now. Left a big hole!

That's one way of fixing the battery tray haha. Never crossed my mind that it could be cut out completely and replaced. Impressive.

Wings and bonnet off, then wipers and wiper motor. Removed the remains of the original battery tray - just need to cut the back wall when I get some more discs. Need to cut the back wall of the replacement tray to match where its cut on the car. Should be welding it in this weekend.

It's welded in now - just need to treat it to some POR15, seam sealer then paint. It was a big old pain in the cock but totally worth it. Big thanks to John Willy for welding skills.

Decent mate! You get the repair panel from vw? Was it hard to drill out the old one? I welded a plate to mine and sealed it in but it's still annoying me, would like to do what you've done

No repair panel available - need to cut a good one out of another car as shown above then unpick all the spot welds to free the actual tray itself. Getting the poxy one out involves drilling and chiselling all the spot welds and cutting the back wall all with very restricted access. Sounds a lot easier than it is! Took about 30 hours including stripping both cars to have access to everything neccessary.

Getting all the shittiest jobs done first - today I have been mostly scraping bastard seam sealer off. My hands are wrecked. Just need to do the other side then the worst stuff is over (hopefully!)

Other side scraped clean now. Gonna empty the engine bay and remove suspension next as the engine bay is first in line for painting.

Ready to drop the engine and box out now. Biggest ballache so far was getting the headlights out - all the screws were buggered so had to use mole grips on the engine bay side.

Done some more stripping while I wait for time on the ramp to remove engine and box. Doors and tailgate stripped bare, side glass, seat belts and rear shelf/speaker supports out. Once the screen and motor are out the inner wings, battery tray and sills will be POR15'd and the engine bay will be prepped for paint.

Theres a few rusty bits on the drivers side - nothing serious though. Gearbox side is pretty good. Once the rust is treated and seam sealed it should be good to go for paint.

Today has mostly been about cleaning all the wax and shit off the inside of the wings and treating the bits of surface rust.

Cleaned and treated both sides of the slam panel and headlight brackets. Pretty tedious!

Been painting suspension and steering parts today whilst the engine bay got some paint too. Progress!

Inner wings and sills stone chipped plus some under bonnet stuff like brake lines, servo, steering rack, arb and control arms re-fitted. Once the legs are in it can be wheeled back for the rest of the spray job.

Its rolling again! Been painting engine mounts, bumper bar, brakes etc. while I wait until my main painter man clears his backlog so he can get stuck in into it.

Been busying myself with doing a load of stuff that won't be seen this week. Please excuse the hideous colour of the calipers - they will be replaced with anodised silver ones when I get round to sending some for refurbishment.

Been cleaning the engine and gearbox so I can decide what to paint and what to leave as is. The sump is coated in what appears to be stone chip type paint - I have no idea if this is factory or not. Gearbox will come up nice once its been steam cleaned. Check out the peculiar little reduction gear that the standard speedo cable screws into. I believe the other 2 T reg cars now run UK spec clocks.

Paint job will commence within a week. Next job is to get the motor spruced up. Been wrestling with dirty oily stuff today. On the plus side it seems that only the starter motor has been replaced in the past. On the negative side the cambelt and water pump appear to be the originals! So much for having had a charger rebuild and cam belt and water pump back in 2010 - either the reciepts were fake or the guy paid good money for stuff that wasn't done. Anyways, no nuts or bolts were rounded or studs snapped during the strip so I dont feel too pissed off! Couple more bits to come off then it can be cleaned up and probably painted.

Just got to throw the new clutch and the cleaned gearbox on and its ready to go in.

Finished cleaning the gearbox, then unwrapped and re-wrapped the wiring loom. Actually quite enjoyed it!

Seems to be a sound bloke. Picked it up a week after dropping it off and watched it being reassembled. Would have been even quicker if he didn't go to MIVW in Holland last week.

Some more paint is on - doors, wings, tailgate and bonnet just need polishing. Fitted flywheel, new clutch and gearbox today. Got it all finished up and ready to install and realised I'd not fitted the new release bearing. Bollocks! I'll do it at the weekend.

In the last 3 months I think I've had 5 days away from it. Do between 2 and 4 hours a day on it after work - obviously more at weekends! When its finished I've got another project to do - a two wheeled one - probably have a bit of a rest first though!

Had its final buffing session today - been getting it back together. Built up the back end and put the dash back in and all was going well. All lights work, horn, wipers and washers all good. Its been started a few times this aftetnoon and there were no problems until I came to move it when I'd done for the day - turned the key and......nothing! No dash lights no pump priming no relay clicks, not a sausage! Sidelights and hazards still worked so I can only assume that my ignition switch is fooked or maybe just its plug has come out? Didn't hang about to investigate as I needed feeding. Another job to go on the to do list!

Took the dash back out to try and find the problem - turns out it was just the plugs on the back of the fuse box hanging out. Messing about done with the wiper mechanism went in (PITA) then I finished off the engine bay with the new stickers. Arch liners and front bumper next followed by the mirrors. Finished off the day by putting the rear seat belts and parcel shelf supports - and putting the dash back in again. Probably do the side trims tomorrow but the arches are probably gonna let the appearance down until I work out how to clean off the boot polish type stuff that the previous owner hurled at them.

Cracking work as usual dude, be you are a master at hauling the dash in and out now! I've had the problem before of the fusebox plug falling out ffs! Nearly on the road now :)

Cheers guys! A lot of today was spent cleaning plastic trims. Once cleaned with thinners I rubbed a little boiled
linseed oil into them - look half decent now. All said trims are now fitted which completes the exterior of the car. Just need to fit the interior now but due to a massive backlog at work (because of this build) I may not be finished until next weekend. :(

Got a bit more done today after work, passenger side doorcards and seat belt now fitted.

Got the rest of the interior bar the seats in today. Gutter trims also went on. All thats left to do now is fit the seats, replace the water in the cooling system with coolant and spend a decent amount of time cleaning the horrendous amount of shite off it that its gathered over the last couple of weeks! Should be back on the road very soon. ;D

Seats finally went in today - I can use my dining room again now! The nice new rocker cover gasket was weeping oil after a test drive. Whipped it off and put a fine bead of black silicone on both sides - seems to have done the trick. Gonna do a few more miles in it tomorrow then give it a proper good clean. Put it away for now, going for a pint!

Moving my hoard of spares to the unit so theres room in the garage for the car took far too long today. Didn't have time to clean the interior but did do a reasonable job on the exterior. Heres a few shots taken just before I put it away - will finish cleaning and add rear badge later in the week. Will get some decent pics then.

Done a bit more cleaning today - 13" RAs are even more of a pain to clean than 14s. Not satisfied with the finish of plastics so I'm gonna try some stuff a friend has used on his 205 GTI - his plastics look ace!

The result is crazy and lasts for ages, water beads of it and everything.
I just use a sponge for it then a soft cloth to even it out.

Cool - I'll give that a go! I think the key to good looking plastics is probably down to them being spotlessly cleaned before treatment with this kind of product. When bright sunlight hits my arches you can still see a little evidence of that boot polish type stuff that the previous owner slapped on them. I'm possibly being too fussy!

Done some more cleaning today - large amounts of crap came out of the seats, probably do it again at some point as theres more to come out. Still finding polish residue and other stuff I've missed before. Most likely I'll leave any more cleaning until it gets put away for the winter - I'd much rather drive it than clean it while the weathers still good.

Couldn't help myself - took one look at my dusty engine bay today and had to give it a quick clean. Got a new scuttle cover coming soon, also ordered a new back box from VW Heritage - not cheap but it'll fit a lot better than the pattern one does!

Was having a good look around the engine the other day and noticed a small oil leak coming from behind the timing belt cover on the charger. Done 350 miles grandad style so far running it in and saw a patch of oil under the car. Gonna whip it off tomorrow so it can go back to OCD. Hopefully be back in action soon.

Removed charger this morning and took it back to OCD. The seal behind the pulley was replaced and I was on my way in half an hour. Refitted it this afternoon - its quite difficult to do without marking any paint - so I wrapped it in an old pillow case while wrestling it into position and seem to have got away without damaging anything. The MOT ran out today so I'll hopfully get that sorted now its leak free again. ;D

Its not leak free after all! Once the seal glue had been left to set for 24 hours I started it up and left it ticking over until it was up to temperature. Had a peek underneath and it was leaking even more than before. Let it cool then removed it and cleaned the oil off the alternator and intercooler (again). Pretty pissed off!

Some good news today - my brand spanking new scuttle cover arrived. So did my Leistritz back box - its a little bit grubby but it has been sat around for a long time. I'll give it a scrub and hopefully be fitting it soon.

Classic Parts through VW Heritage - the regular ones are not available but the diesel one is. It's the same as a regular one but with a layer of spongy foam on the underside. 8)

Think that the seal glue hasn't worked - don't know 100% for sure yet.
The back box has been obsolete at VW for a few years now.

This has been out of use since the roads have been salty, just been getting it out every couple of weeks and running it up to temp for half an hour or so to keep the battery healthy.

Been collecting parts for it instead of driving it - recent stuff includes floor mats, a blank key to cut as I only have one for it, and some of those rubber mounts for the fuel pump bracket. Considering fitting fog lights too.

After the charger went back twice to OCD with an oil leak from the seal behind the pulley (the second time took 5 weeks!) an investigation was in order. Not wanting to take the whole car there as he wanted, the charger was stripped at home. First thing noticed was the 3 chunks broken off the timing belt cog!

The reason for the leak was blindingly obvious - check out the massive amount of pitting on the sealing surface of the oil slinger.

If he'd actually looked at it on any of the 3 occasions when he had it in bits he could have told me I needed a new one and saved us both unnecessary ball ache. I know plenty of people have been satisfied by his service in the past, but in my case it has left me feeling a little disappointed. Anyways, a new oil slinger and seal went in and its finally leak free!

Would definitely be quicker and easier to break in and then hotwire it, rather than replicate a key from a photo :D

Googled "plasticare trim dye" and several places to buy it popped up - often listed on eBay too.

Was just thinking the other day - its about time the oil was changed in this. On arrival at my unit this afternoon, I caught sight of an empty ramp next door! An opportunity like this cannot be wasted - so I quickly got the job done before the chance was gone.

Finally got round to wheel bearing replacement at the weekend. Because it's only been together for a couple of years (and copper grease was used) it came apart very easily.

Bit of a milestone rolled round the other day -

Having shat an ecu and a hall sensor in the last couple of years, I got off lightly this year as only a wheel bearing has needed replacing.
Once given its annual wax polish, service and MOT, it got a decent few days use before being laid up for the Winter.

Treated this to a good bit of attention recently. Load compensator valve, in tank pump, radiator plus cam belt and water pump were all replaced.
