Title: What lowering springs?
Post by: fil_rite13 on November 21, 2008, 09:28:32 pm
Like a cock i was all set to put my G40 up for sale, however after driving it again after over 12 months i want to keep it. Problem is i sold my H&R cup kit (along with other tuning parts) so my plan now is for some -40mm lowering springs on the stock G40 dampers. I'm planning on running 14" alloys and was looking at eibach spings. Does this sound like a ok combination or would i be just as well off with some budget lowering springs?

At -40 you'll get spring dislocation using the standard shocks. Some folk don't seem too bothered but you might get an MOT fail if the examiner spots this. Best go for a complete kit with shortened damper rods.

thanks for information but am running on aftermarket shoks at moment problem is the springs are too low and too hard great on a race track but around the potholed roads of south yorkshire a bit too jarring

i personally would invest in the H&R cup kit again..it really is a great all round kit..if you can afford it that is.

I've been on standard replacement OEM shocks and Eibach -40mm springs for well over a year now and personally I find them a great combination, I'm toying with loosing an extra 10mm on lowering caps, but will wait til I fit my subframe to see how it effects the set-up.

There is nothing to really see looking at a H&R Cup kit. They look the same as the normal stuff regardless of make, if they didn't they wouldn't fit!
The H&R springs are black and the inserts/rear struts are silver.  ;)
The springs are obviously stiffer and shorter than the OE ones. The rear struts have an abutment stop on the body for the lower spring seat to sit against. If you fit the spacer provided it raises the spring seat by 20mm, hence you have the option of 40 or 60mm lowering.
The front damper inserts have a shorter piston rod to match the shorter springs.
The H&R Cup kit is exceptionally good gear. :)

However, if you just want to replace the springs, you could do a lot worse than buy the Eibach ones. Eibach is reknowned for making excellent quality components, and I've never had a problem with spring dislocation on 40mm lower springs/standard length damper rod suspension.

Food for thought there Breadman as i`de already bought the GSF Lowering kit
but after reading of spring dislocation on standard shocks it put me off fitting
 them.

As I stated, I've never had a problem with 40mm lower springs on standard dampers.
