£29 seems fair enough to me, VW wanted to charge me more than that for a tiny water pipe connector elbow the other day (so I didn't bother).

Wish I could just not bother with the breather pod. Vw do charge stupid amounts suppose they cab as there the only ones that keep some parts.

these are pretty similar, though the pipe is straight not long and curved like  ag40... should be ok if you run a catch tank

Do you reckon that would work better with a catch tank rather than the standard one?

no I'd say it's more likely to work much worse since it's a cheapo part

What about giving your existing one a bloody good cleaning?

As they are just a press fit I was a little worried about refitting an old one in case it leaked, even though it was really good inside (only on there for a few thousand miles). So I spent the 30 quid on a new VAG one, a drop in the ocean considering the price of all the other rebuild parts.

yeah hardly seems worth risking hassle for the sake of £29, I just fitted a new VAG one to mine when I rebuilt the engine a couple of years ago, the cost of that was insignificant in comparison to most other things I buy for the car!  It's barely more than an oil change.

Quite right, but it gets to the point where you've spent so much already on other bits (especially rebuild and uprated/tuning bits) it would be stupid to skimp on something even the base spec engine needs. Would you run your ££££'s worth of freshly built 1341 turbo on Wilkinsons or Asda engine oil because it saves you 20 quid?

My stepdad had bought Tesco Value bluestripe mineral oil to use in the MGB GT V8 he used to have!!! When he sold it he kindly donated the oil to me :) I used some of it as engine assembly lube and the rest is still on a shelf in my garage somewhere...

I presume the PY blocks dont have the 2 bolt holes by the breather?
If some do, then you can always use an ABD plastic breather pod with O ring seal. I cleaned one out and fitted it to my 1W crank case.
