what have you removed from the engine when you did the charger service? does the charger spin freely?

not removed anything just the cone and heat sheald to get it out,. the charger is moving freely, no obstructions etc and is nice and firm, eg, u need a firm grip to turn the pulley.
ok the bolt snapped off into the casting for the earth wire but i've relocated that and the 19mm bolt won't go back in as its really tight and starting to cross thread, but other than that everythings ok,.

any ideas??

pull a HT lead off and put a plug on the end of it, earth the plug to the engine and turn the engine over and see if you are getting a spark, try it on all the leads.

there should be another earth strap between the top gearbox mount and the chassis leg near the coil.

yeah wasnt suggesting that was the problem but it should be there all the same.  If the engine isn't well earthed it can lead to dodgy running problems.
