Title: what discs and pads you running? standard g40 size
Post by: supercharged spaniel on June 25, 2009, 12:54:26 pm
I need to sort my discs and pads out.. ive been using brembo ones from gsf but both sets have ended up warping.  I used Pagid pads also from gsf.  Theyve worked really well but dont last long enough..there is loads of meat left on both disc and pad but warping is no good. So i want to try something different.  Im not after ridiculous stopping power i just want nice reliable fresh set up and wondered what people are using.

I'm tempted to get some prices from vw for discs and pads as i want some new handbrake cables anyways.  Has anyone used vw discs and pads? and if not what would you recommend?

cheers

dan

fairly sure you'll get brembo discs and pagid pads from vw anyway.

I'm surprised you are warping the brembo discs so much, I've never had that issue.  I use bog standard brembo discs (albeit 256mm ones) with my 4pots on track days and I've not warped them.

With 239mm discs I always liked Ferodo DS2500 pads on both my g40 and my GT.  My GT had vented discs on it too not long after I bought the car as I found the standard solid ones to be awful and overheat in no time.

Spaniel, I'm using Ebc's on standard disks and to be honest I'm not too happy with them, although there doesn't seem to be much fade in normal use, there's a lack of initial bite (which has been an EBC strongpoint on every other car I've run them on). However the pedal feel's not too bad, a little wooden maybe, but that's Polos for you isn't it!

I had the same set-up on my Gt road rally car and have experienced quite bad fade in competition, but obviously they were taking a pasting at the time!

I dont understand why it's warping them either...it's only noticable on hard braking from high speeds...  it's like a vibration and a humming noise (wum wum wum) lol ..say from 80+ and more so when theyre hot, it was the same before so I changed them for the same ones on the thought that it was just a defect cos overall I liked the bite they provided when fairly new but they've done the same as the old ones...

don;t want to teach you to suck eggs, but your discs will appear warped if your hub isn't spotless - they will wear unevenly.  Same is true if your caliper isn't completely free, they can wear strangely and it feels like a warped disc.

I ran EBC green stuff with black diamond disc's a few years back, initial bite was good, but they did fade when worked hard.  Disc's showed signs of cracking long before pads were worn out, and my wheels needed cleaning every week. Hence now runnig 256'ers.

I'd recommend Brembo plain or max, or VW discs. Along with Ferodo DS pads. Seem a very good combo to me.

you can get them refurbished by big red, or exchange from gsf - or probably vw anyway!

I have a set of refurbed unused vw11 under the bed, they are slightly later spec tho - with a thread for an an air deflector - like mk4 polos have

DS2500 are the track ones, will prob need warming up. DS are the fast road ones and slightly cheaper.

I never found I had to warm up the ds2500s, never had any issues anyway.  Although I guess I don't ask that much of the brakes till the engine is warmed up anyway!  DS2000 are the less hardcore ones aren't they?  Then there's also ds3000s which I think are the motorsport ones.  Dan will probably know better though, you used to work for ferodo for a while didn't you?

Yeah, I did work for them a couple of summers. They never did motorsport type pads where I worked though.

The fast road ones used to be called DS2000, now they are just DS. Good to know the DS2500 don't need much warming up, like you say you don't give it much from cold. DS3000 are definately track pads.
