Hi Guys,
I've just got myself an original 1992 G40 in not bad condition to be honest i don't know a lot about them any tips on things to look out for would be majorly appreciated!! its got a stage 2 charger and its been chipped but i don't know any more info on that side of things, pushing 140 hp on its last dyno supposedly. i also need a set of bumpers for her because some clever fellow decided to paint them and now the paint is chipping off and looks like crap.. also the radiator has a slight leek but i understand that there not a standard 1.3 CL rad? are they the same as the 1.3 GT? and and im after a standard airbox the big cone filter thats currently on it does nothing for me Smiley

Sorry if ive posted in the wrong section i new to this,
like i said any info would be greatly appreciated!
Cheers Jason

welcome to g40 ownership, g40 radiators are slightly different to a 1.3cl.  But they will fit and indeed most aftermarket places list them as the same radiator.

So if i replaced it with a standard 1.3 CL rad as a temp mesure would i run in to any heat problems? or would it be a lot better to just fork out for a new one and be done with it?
thanks for the reply Smiley

Not 100% on the radiator but this write up is a good place to start if you are new to them.

a stock g40 will probably be fine with a stock rad (prob more effective than a silted up shit old one) but if you're planning high power or proper oem stock then price a new one at vw

Great help. thanks SamG40 good little read Smiley got a few things to check now.. lol
And good advise PeteG40 im planning on keeping it stock for the moment just wanna restore a good example of a decent car! but as things break i will probably replace them with preformance parts so probably a good idea to just get the real deal! how about the bumpers, are they the same as a regular 1.3 CL? if not any idea were i might find them?

Thanks for all your help!

Bumpers are the same on all mk2 facelifts i believe, With the exception of the front fog cut outs on the g40. If it were me id sand them back and paint them proply to save my self a few bob. Just done mine, Sanded/flatted off then sprayed with matt black. Very OEM looking.

A non g40 rad will be fine with a high powered supercharged g40, turbo'ed would be different i guess. My engine has had nearly every mod possible and i run the non g40 one.

A mk2 Golf GTI 16v rad fits IIRC, I fitted one to my mk2 Golf when I G'd that years ago. I noticed the 1.3 Golf one was the same mounts as a G40 one, and I had a 16v rad already, offered that up and again, same mounts so I went with that, so if the mounts are the same then it should fit, it's also got more cores in it I think so will cool even better. However, it may be overkill and actually cool too much? I've never had a problem with overheating on a Polo, it's normally the opposite!

I've got a mate who's restoring a mrk 2 gti at the moment so might see if he's got a spare rad kicking around and give it a try for the min. just got the air box through but haven't fitted it yet as the only time i have to work on it is weekends.. but cant wait to get on with her this weekend! gonna give her a full service and if the weathers any good might get some pics too Smiley
